Egil holds a Master of Arts in Theatre Studies (UNSW), Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and English (Macquarie), a Diploma in Directing (NIDA) and a Diploma in Teaching (Alexander Mackie). He is currently a doctoral candidate at Queensland University of Technology where his research centres on developing a directing methodology building on Stanislavski's Active Analysis and contemporary theories of visual cognition.

Egil began directing as a teenager with the Sydney Latvian Theatre company. After graduating from university he worked first as a teacher and later as a specialist counselling psychologist for the NSW government. After completing NIDA's directing course he worked as a freelance director (productions included: Cyrano de Bergerac with India's national Theatre Repertory; Lillian, Spoleto Festival; Rent, Wharf Theatre and national tour). He was Associate Director at Nimrod where he directed The Golden Age and The Kiss of the Spiderwoman. He was then appointed Artistic Director of the Q Theatre where he directed The Currency Lass.

In 1988 Egil received a DAAD scholarship to study directing practice in Germany. He was seconded to Berlin's Schaubuehne Theater, where he observed Peter Stein's rehearsals of The Three Sisters. He also observed rehearsals at the Kammerspiele theatre in Munich.
On returning to Australia Egil worked as Casting Director at Sydney Theatre Company for many years, before casting the Australian production of The Lion King. Later he was appointed Global Casting Director for Disney Theatrical Productions in New York. Whilst at Disney in the USA he also worked on the stage adaptation of High School Musical. Egil returned to Australia as Artistic Associate/Company Manager at Sydney Theatre Company before becoming Head of Directing at NIDA in 2008.

Egil's on-going interest in developing Stanislavski's Active Analysis has lead to teaching engagements at the Ernst Busch theatre school in Berlin. In 2010 he visited the St Petersburg State Theatre School in Russia where he worked with Prof Sergei Tcherkasski. Egil invited Prof Sharon Carnicke, a world authority on Active Analysis from the University of Southern California, to visit NIDA on two occasions. He has also presented papers on this topic at ADSA conferences in Australia and at York University in the UK. In 2013 Egil was a guest teacher at the Shanghai Academy of Theatre Arts and taught Active Analysis to the acting students there. In 2014 Egil will work with the Young Artists Program at Opera Australia to develop an opera concert presentation.
