在梅勒带着对亚洲戏剧极大的热情来到新加坡从事戏剧创作和教学之前，他早已是澳大利亚戏剧界最杰出的导演和教师之一。梅勒拥有独一无二的戏剧职业生涯：曾在四个风格迥异但都名扬国内外的剧场担任艺术总监。这些剧场包括两个致力于经典剧作创作和推广外国戏剧的剧场（皇家昆士兰剧场和简街剧场）以及两个张扬着先锋气质的新兴剧场（贝尔弗剧场和剧匣子-麦芽厂剧场）。他不仅是一位获得众多荣誉的导演，还翻译了包括莎士比亚、契诃夫、布莱希特、易普生和莫里哀等作家的经典剧本。如今，他编导双栖，导演原创剧本的同时也从事剧本创作和戏剧学研究。
梅勒也是一名歌剧导演和电影导演。在众多的重要艺术节上，都定期出现他的作品。作为一名戏剧教师，梅勒更是训练出了一批优秀的演员，导演和设计师。
在超过45年的职业生涯中，梅勒导演了近百部作品。他还在澳大利亚艺术委员会、国立作家中心和多所戏剧院校（国立戏剧艺术学院、维多利亚艺术学院以及昆士兰科技大学）担任过总监，会员、顾问等职务。他还是一位时尚，历史和戏剧评论家。同时，他还受邀担任多所世界各地的戏剧学院的访问教授和特邀导演。
作为第一个位研究亚洲戏剧的澳大利亚戏剧人，梅勒早在1979年就到访过上海戏剧学院。他从欧洲戏剧和亚洲戏剧中提炼出一套独创的戏剧教学法。他担任过新加坡拉萨尔艺术学院表演系的系主任，现今他已是澳洲跨国际跨文化戏剧合作领域的最杰出艺术家。

Before moving to Singapore to further his interest in Asian theatre, Aubrey Mellor was a leading theatre director and teacher in Australia. Uniquely, he has been professional Artistic Director of four significant theatre companies, two devoted to classics and the international repertoire (Royal Queensland Theatre Co and Jane Street Theatre) and two to new work and the Avant Garde (Nimrod, now Belvoir, and Playbox-Malthouse). An award-winning director and translator of classics - Shakespeare, Chekhov, Brecht, Ibsen, Moliere etc – he later devoted himself to playwriting, dramaturgy, and new work with living writers. He has also directed Opera and Film, has regularly produced work for many major International Arts Festivals, and has taught many award-winning actors, directors and designers. Apart from directing hundreds of productions over 45 years, Aubrey served as Director, Board Member or Advisor, in Australia Council for Arts, National Playwrights Centre, and several drama schools in Australia (NIDA, VCA, QUT); has written on style, history and comedy, and is visiting professor and director to a number of international training schools. The first Australian to study Asian theatre (first visiting STA in 1979), Aubrey has developed his own training methods drawing from both European and Asian methodologies. He joined Lasalle as Dean of Performing Arts (Dance, Theatre and Music Schools) before becoming Senior Fellow to advance international and intercultural collaborations.
